Network – Feed stock for cell cultured food

The Network will pave the way for a new growth media industry underpinning the emerging cell culture food production in Denmark

Feed Stock

Within the next 5 years cell-based food production will reach the tipping point of price parity, taste, texture and hit the mass market. Denmark has all the elements science, technology, companies, raw materials and a skilled workforce. The network brings these elements together to create a new value chain for growth media for industrial scale cell-based food production.

Bio-solutions are well established in the pharmaceutical and enzyme industries. However, producing food is different, it requires huge volumes at low cost. At present the bio-manufacturing costs for food ingredients are two to three times as high as for the same products from agriculture and food industry. However, scale, low-cost green energy, sustainable and efficient production medias would lower those costs to parity or below.

The vision

The vision is to develop a food-grade Danish growth media industry to produce food on less agricultural land with a smaller climate and environmental footprint. Denmark should become a competitive industrial leader on precision fermentation of food ingredients and cultivated meat that radically reduces the carbon footprint from food, increase food security and lower the land use for animal sourced food. Sustainable feed stock for cell-based food production is a prerequisite for establishing a Danish stronghold on future foods.

The objective

The objective of the network is to enlightening potentials and barriers and facilitate stakeholders to collaborate throughout the B2B value chain to accelerate the development of food-grade Danish growth media production.

  • Establish a Danish ecosystem for industrial growth media production for cell cultured food
  • Roadmap for a Danish production of food grade growth media based on local biomaterials, agricultural crops and cascade use of bio-streams.

Network Activities:

  • Thematic network meetings with topics like: Growth media for cell cultures, technology for upcycling of bio-streams, markets for bio-streams and growth media, ecosystems for producing growth media at scale.
  • Study tour to USA - 2026
  • International conferences on industrial growth media production - AAU, Copenhagen, 2027

The network creates a critical mass and an ecosystem around feed stock. The Network has a value chain approach bringing together universities, agriculture and feed stock producers, food and biotech industry, equipment providers, regulators and NGOs.

Networking activities are explorative and precompetitive.

The network is open for all relevant participants.

Newsletter

The newsletter (monthly) summarizes international news related to production media for precision fermentation and cultivated meat at industrial scale. You are welcome to sign up for the newsletter by mail to: solheim@proteinfrontiers.dk
